  • Inspiration!

I'm definitely going back to the Raw Food Diet. Tonight I've stayed in due to the snow packed roads and I was goofing off on youtube and came across a documentary on Raw Food called Health Junkies. I highly recommend watching it, especially if you know little to no information about the diet. My plan is to start after Christmas, I made it 17+ days last time on only raw foods, and I'm sure I can do it again. Next week it's raw food and colonics! I hope you ladies have a wonderful Christmas!

  • Progress & Vent

Progress- The quest on getting back to my original weight is going extremely well, despite Turkey Day yesterday. I've already lost 4lbs, so I'm not too far off of where I want to be. I've been scanning past posts of mine, going back to old healthy habits, cutting my portion sizes and eating 4 small meals a day (keeps the metabolism going so my sugar doesn't drop). I haven't been exercising as much as I should, but I figure I must be burning a few calories from running after 2 year old babies all day, everyday.

Vent- I've been really concerned about my cousin Ann the past few days. An older lady that we both know recently saw her and commented that she was fat, she actually told her, "You got fat". Ann has never been overweight in her life, she's been bulimic on and off for years. She weighs about 100lbs and is now thinking she's fat, because of this lady's comment. It amazes me how rude people can be. Throughout my life I've had people comment on my weight, or I've overheard them comment on someone's weight. I can understand if people are genuinely concerned or worried, but they don't have to make others feel bad in the process. What's annoying as well is the fact that most people that have said I'm fat or gaining weight have not been skinny themselves. Maybe they feel bad about the way they look and so they try and make others feel as miserable as they are. However, it's still no excuse for their rude behavior. Anyway, I just felt bad. I hope this lady's comment doesn't send her spiraling down. She's a few years younger than me and I've learned to brush off the rude things other people say towards me, but I'm not so sure she's at that place yet.

  • Boyfriends & Food

Its been a struggle losing the 10lbs I've gained over the summer. I've been living with my boyfriend since May and he has not been thrilled to take on my extremely healthy eating habits. Our fridge and cabinets are not filled with healthy treats and too many times I've given into temptation. I don't know what to do. I've always lived with my vegan sister and we only kept healthy food in our apartment. Now I have chips, muffins, candy, pies..etc all around me! What's even worse is that he's 6'2, 185lbs-190lbs and he can pretty much eat anything he wants and stay lean. I'm 5'3 and you can definitely tell when I've gained even a few pounds (or I can tell at least). I'm not going to give up, but I know a few things have to change. I miss my days of having nothing but veggies, grains, lean meats and fruit.

  • Healthy Eating: Thai

Hi all! Life has settled down for me and I'm hoping I can post more often. My weight has been up and down for the past four months due to stressful personal situations and I need to get it in check before it gets out of control.

The key thing that has given me the best results/long-lasting results is when I do all of the cooking myself. When I cook I know exactly what goes into everything, so I'm not getting all of the added calories like extra oil, butter and fatty sauces. Lately I've been into creating Thai dishes. I wanted to share some beneficial properties of herbs used in Thai cooking. Not only are these herbs extremely healthy, but they taste amazing with lean meats, chicken, veggies, soup and brown rice.

Cumin-Is considered an effective remedy for indigestion. It is also taken to relieve gas, diarrhea, and cramps.

Garlic- Has been used as a medicine and a food since the time of the Egyptian Pharaohs. It fights hardening of the arteries through its proven ability to lower cholesterol. It also has proven antibiotic properties and a mild anti-clotting effect on the blood. It is also a natural diuretic.

Ginger- Helps relieve many conditions including: motion sickness, digestive complaints, arthritis, high cholesterol and dangerous blood clots. It has also been used as a fat-burning aid

Lemongrass- Has therapeutic properties that include diuretic, anti-flatulence, anti-flu and antibacterial properties are contained in the essential oil of lemongrass.

Mint- Is considered by namny to be a remedy for indigestion and gas. Fresh mint can also be tossed in boiling water, with a tsp of honey and made into a delicious tea that combats bad breath.

Onions- Help prevent cancer not only by putting the breaks on the development of dangerous tumors but also by stomping out harmful bacteria that may cause the start of stomach cancer.

Romaine Lettuce- Is one of the best vegetable sources of beta-carotene. A study at the University of Illinois shows that high levels of beta-carotene inhibited the growth of prostate-cancer cells by 50%.

Shallots- A miniature member of the allium family (onions) contain high levels of vitamin A. Just one tablespoon contains 600 IU of vitamin A. This essential nutrient helps keep immunity strong and protects against vision problems such as cataracts.

Sweet Basil- Is used extensively in aromatherapy for ailments such as stress, migraines, colds and hay fever. It is also quite effective for tension headaches, exhaustion and digestive upsets such as stomach cramps, constipation and diarrhea.

Turmeric- A spice very rich in antioxidants, including a compound called cur cumin. In studies, cur cumin has been shown to reduce the risk of colon cancer by 58%. Other research suggests it may help prevent skin cancer also. Turmeric has been used for indigestion, gas, bloating, stomach pain, cramps, diarrhea, and bladder inflammation.

  • Raw Carob Powder :o)

Since chocolate is fatal and I can never have a small snack size, I've switched to raw carob powder. I have to say that I like it better than chocolate! It has a chocolatey, earthy taste to it, with less sugar than chocolate and it's filling. I've been putting the carob powder in smoothies, coffee and just mixing it with a cup of almond milk for a late night snack. I'll provide everyone who's interested in it a little information about carob. *Side note* I've been on the Raw Food Diet for a week now and I'm down 5lbs, 5 away from my goal weight of 110lbs! I hope you ladies are doing well, if you need more info on the Raw Food Diet look at my previous posts :o)

    Alternative to chocolate

Carob has rightly been coined the healthy alternative to chocolate. As most of us are now aware, carob is free from the stimulants caffeine and theobromine found in chocolate. It is also naturally sweet, so carob products will generally contain substantially less sugar than their chocolate counterparts.  Carob powder can be substituted for cocoa powder in any recipe.  Carob is also available in bars, drops and in confectionery.

    Advantages of Carob over Chocolate

Carob is free from caffeine and theobromine which can be addictive and can cause allergies. Caffeine and theobromine are stimulants. Caffeine is the most active and works directly on the brain stimulating the senses, inspiration and alertness. It can be transmitted through breast milk and pregnant women are advised to restrict their caffeine intake. Caffeine has analgesic properties but also has side-effects such as anxiety, nervousness, nausea, and palpitations. Caffeine not only stimulates the brain and other organs but also increases the heart rate. It can provoke emotional reactions. It stimulates the gastric juices and acts as a diuretic and so can cause excess loss of the water soluble vitamins B & C. Caffeine stimulates release of the body's stored energy reserves, meaning that sugars are released into the blood. This can increase the risk of diabetes and possibly obesity and can cause mood swings.

    How much do it eat?

Commonly, 15 grams of carob powder is mixed with applesauce for children. Adults should take at least 20 grams a day. The powder can be mixed in applesauce or with sweet potatoes. Carob should be taken with plenty of water. Please note that infant diarrhea must be monitored by a health care professional and that proper hydration with a high electrolyte fluid is critical during acute diarrhea.  Carob is free from phenylethylamine which can trigger migraines.  It is free fromamine which can trigger migraines and allergic reactions.

    Nutritional Information
Carob is up to 8% protein and contains vitamins A, B, B2, B3 and D. It is also high in calcium, phosphorus, potassium and magnesium and contains iron, manganese, barium, copper and nickel. However, it should of course only be eaten in moderation alongside a balanced diet.  It has no oxalic acid which prevents the body using calcium and zinc. These minerals are vital to a healthy skin and the presence of oxalic acid in chocolate may be connected to the onset of spottiness noticed by some teenagers on the consumption of larger amounts of chocolate.

About Me

  • I don't want to die and I want to look and feel great, so I stopped hurting my body. I eat what many may call "hippy" food, and my body loves it! I exercise everyday, I love running, pilates, yoga, hiking, I try and be out-doors as much as possible. I'm really laid back and for once happy with where I am with my body. I'm 5'3, 110lbs, and I don't starve myself or purge anymore! I give thinspo through words. Our society is horrible and I just hope all of the girls in the world will one day be healthy and see themselves for what they really are...beautiful :)
